HS APR 28

Dear High School Parents and Students,

Thank you for your continued effort and commitment to our distance learning programme. Here is our HS newsletter for this week. Be safe!

Change to our Seniors Events
As you might know by now, the Class of 2020 events, including the senior breakfast, farewell, roll call and graduation, are going to be postponed to a later date. This is tough for them, their families and all of us really. But we will host a special Seniors Awards and GoodBye Ceremony on May 29 at 1:30 p.m.

20 Time Projects
Thank you to Ms. Moreland and Ms. Galle for inviting parents and teachers to the 20 time presentations. It was fun, interesting and pretty amazing to have continued to guide students through their projects despite the complicated circonstances. Students followed their passions, they were reflectionate, and they learned quite a bit about themselves as learners. And thank you to all the mentors and parents who also helped students during this process.

NHS Tutoring
Our fantastic National Honor Society, lead by Ms. Gallé, are launching a peer to peer tutoring
AC Highschool, the NHS has been working hard to figure out how we can best serve you during this time of remote learning. We've put together a tutoring list of some of our most capable students so you can get the help you'll need while we're all at home. The tutors' names and subjects can be found in the first tab of the document, and the schedules are available on the second tab. Please don't hesitate to set up a meeting with them for anything academically related, be it help on math, history, or even tips on organization/homework skills!

ASB Challenges
Thank you to everyone that has participated! We still encourage everyone to do the challenges throughout the quarantine.
There is an update for the trick shot challenge:
1st place now gets 150 points, 2nd place gets 100 points and 3rd place gets 50.
All other challenges will continue going normally and all the information needed has been sent out already.
The points for the ASB challenges are separate from the house points we used to have. This was done so every house can start at the same level during the quarantine.
Current Standings for the ASB Challenges Points:
1st - Jaguars - 515 points
2nd - Bears - 490 points
3rd - Toucans - 445 points
4th - Sharks - 325 points

College Counseling News - April 24

Mr. Lysha's Big Idea
In my opinion, and it is just my opinion, even though most universities are not saying this yet, I believe that universities will be starting online for the fall semester. How do you feel about this? How will this affect the choice you will make? These are the questions that need to be answered honestly. Different people will make different decisions, but it is most important you listen to your own voice to know the way forward.

United States Deposit Day Deadline - May 1
If you are a 12th grader intending to attend university in the United States, it is most likely that you must deposit by May 1 in order to reserve your spot, even if you plan on deferring for a year. Do not miss this deadline!

Canadian College Virtual Fair
May 14, Thursday, 12:00 pm to 2:00 p.m. Register here and you must register by April 27. Canadian universities present include Bishop's, Brock, Lakehead, Memorial, Mount Allison, St. Thomas, University of Victoria, and York. Canada continues to be a wonderful option for university studies, paid internships, and a path to eventual Canadian citizenship. Don't miss out!

Closed Border Information - Student Visas Not Being Issued Currently
Many borders continue to be closed right now for foreign national students wanting to enter countries they are not citizens of. I will be updating this information on a weekly to bi-weekly basis to ensure you have up to date information. Please click on the countries below you have applied to to find updated information regarding student visas. Normally you would apply for your visa 90 days before the start of the academic term, so there still is time for things to change. Additionally, Trump's message regarding immigration does not pertain to US student visas.

CollegeBoard News - SAT Coronavirus Updates
Please see the attached screenshot for confirmed dates of the SAT for the 2020-2021 academic school year. However, please be aware that more and more universities are going SAT Optional, especially for the class of 2021. I literally get multiple emails a day from universities ranked in the top 50 and 100 of their respective categories saying they will no longer use the SAT for the class of 2021 because of the effects of the Coronavirus.

Pro Tip - Do's and Don'ts of Professional Emails to University Reps
This is a great blog from the University of Tulane regarding how to communicate effectively with emails. Definitely worth a read to remind yourself of some common mistakes you definitely want to avoid. Please access the blog here.

As always, if there is anything I can do to help you in this process, please reach out to me via email: lwasser@cotopaxi.k12.ec or via Calendy. Take care everyone and I look forward to hearing from you.

Meet with Teachers - Schedule Appointments
We will continue to encourage students to set up appointments with teachers. Please do not hesitate to reach out to meet with our teachers.

CAS at Home
Mr. Shulman and Ms. Faidutti have created a google classroom to share ideas of cool CAS experiences that can be done at home. The CAS code is cmtf4ra. Those ideas will contribute to maintaining a healthy and balanced life.

Reminder of Netiquette
It is crucial that, together, we maintain strong and positive ways to interact and to present ourselves online. Please support us so that students respect the following netiquette.

Thank you,
