Back to School Night
I look forward to seeing you at our Back to School Night on Thursday, September 5. You are invited to join us from 5:00 p.m. onward in the auditorium foyer for refreshments and mingling. We will begin the presentation promptly at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium.

In the auditorium, you will meet the AC Board of Directors, and receive general information about the Middle School. We will then break out into Grade level presentations, where you will meet the team of your child’s teachers. From there you will attend a session with your child’s first semester elective teacher, and then with your child’s music teacher.

Your “homework” is to come to Back to School Night knowing your child’s first semester elective, and their music class. Thanks!

Back to School Night is targeted to a parent audience. If you would like your child to join you in the sessions, they may, but generally this event is for parents.

I look forward to seeing you on September 5!

Discover Ecuador
A reminder that Discover Ecuador payments are due by Tuesday, September 3. You can find payment and other relevant information on the Middle School Discover Ecuador website. It is important for our service providers that payment is made on time. This is a required learning experience for ALL MS students. The entire Middle School faculty also participates in the learning trips. If, due to an extenuating circumstance, it is impossible for your child to participate in this week of learning, please meet with Sheryl to discuss an alternative. Thank you for your support!

Digging into Standards based Grading
Please join us on Tuesday, September 10, from 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. in the Library to learn more about Standards Based Grading. This marks a shift in the way we report in the Middle School and the workshop will help you to understand why we made the switch, the impact on student learning, and how reports will look this year. Please RSVP at this link. I hope to see you there!

MAP Information
At Academia Cotopaxi, students from Grade 3-10 have been taking tests called Measures of Academic Progress® (MAP)  since 2014. The data gathered for our school has illustrated our students’ strengths and learning needs, has helped teachers target their instruction and has provided administrators with valuable information to make school wide decisions. This is an important assessment and we want our students to take it seriously.

During the week of September 9-13, Middle School students will take the first of three MAP® test sessions, given throughout the year. We give students MAP® tests to determine students’ instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year. Students will take the tests on their own computers during a set schedule from 9:25 a.m. - 10:40 a.m. Please note that students do not need to study for the MAP tests because it is meant to measure accumulated learning to date.

MAP tests are unique in that they are an adaptive test, which means that the test adjusts to each student’s learning level, providing a unique set of test questions based on responses to previous questions. As the student responds to questions, the test responds to the student, adjusting up or down in difficulty. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing.

Following each testing period, you will receive a report showing your child’s growth. You can help your child take this test seriously by valuing the results and discussing them with your child.

Ideas to keep in mind:

  • 3 tests will be administered this week (Math, Language Usage, Reading)
  • The tests are used in multiple ways to support learning, so please encourage and support your son or daughter to take this seriously.
  • As always, ensure your child gets a good night sleep and has breakfast.
  • Remind your son/daughter to bring a book, in case s/he finishes early.

Please note that the MAP window for the Middle School at AC is ONLY September 9-13. All tests must be completed by the end of the day on Friday, September 13. If your child is unable to complete the tests by this time, for any reason, we will not have a score for that test in this testing session.

See you on Thursday!
