2019-20 is the first year the Middle School has adopted Standards Based Grading in all MS classes. Standards based grading is a system of assessing and reporting that describes student progress in relation to a set of standards. Standards based grades communicate students’ current level of performance with the skills on which they are currently working. Our standards come from Common Core, NGSS, AERO, SHAPE, ISTE, ISCA, California English/Spanish Language Development, and National Core Arts Standards.
All Middle School students take Mathematics, Science, Language Art, Social Studies, Music, Physical Education/Health, and Spanish. Students are also enrolled in an elective, such as Design Technology, Robotics, Drama, Ceramics, or General Art.
Caring for the whole Middle School child includes a focus on character, which is embodied in our Approaches to Learning. These include skills under the headings of Self-Management, Communication, and Social Skills. Social Emotional Learning is robust in the Middle School and explicitly taught through Cougar Time lessons during the mentor class.
