Admissions FAQs

All our teachers hold university degrees; 90% of our teachers have graduated from an English language college or university (in the US, Canada, Europe). Our teachers include: counsellors, librarians, psychologists, sports coaches, ELL specialists, learning support specialists, reading and technology integration coaches for all grade levels.

Academia Cotopaxi has a rolling admissions policy that starts as early as October 1 of the year prior of the requested year of admission and we recommend that you apply early so that we can organize the appropriate evaluations and interviews. Students can, be admitted during the school year; however, students from Ecuadorian schools may only be admitted during the first semester of the school year as permitted by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Education.

We have an average of 15 students per class (market average is 20 students). This is an average; there are some classes that have as little as 5 students and as many as 23. Our ratio of students to staff is 5:1; we have 5 children to each staff considering TAs, counselors and other teachers aside from classroom/subject matter teacher.

Applicants must have reached their third or fourth birthday by October 1 for preschool, fifth birthday by October 1 for Kindergarten, sixth birthday by October 1 for Grade 1 and so on for the remaining grades.

IMAGINE is Academia Cotopaxi’s preschool for children 12 months to 4 or 5 years (depending on location).  We have two campuses, one in Quito and one in Cumbaya.Contact to request further information.

We are an IB school. We follow the Primary Years Program (PYP) in the younger grades and the Diploma Program (DP) in High School. We are aligned with AERO standards and are a member of the Common Ground Collaborative (CGC). We also are recognized by the local Ministry of Education. Visit Our Approach for more details.

School meets Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Extracurricular activities run from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Prekinder hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The College Center provides a School Profile that lists recent college acceptances as well as other helpful information about our high school program.

The school makes every effort to provide parents with a decision as quickly as possible. This usually takes one to two working days after the interview has been completed. In some cases additional testing may be required.

Admission and placement decisions are based on the Academia Cotopaxi ability to appropriately meet the needs of those applying and are subject to space and resource limitations.  All prospective students must go through the admissions process and have met all the requirements to receive a final decision. Lastly, Academia Cotopaxi reserves the right to deny admissions to any child who does not meet the admissions requirements or when admission is not considered to be in the best interest of the applicant or the school.

Yes, transportation is an optional service and we offer multiple bus routes in Quito, the Valley (Miravalle, Cumbaya, Tumbaco) and also to hotels in Quito for families in transition.  

Yes, we have a broad range of extracurricular activities for students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 and we offer MS and HS athletics.

No, we do not have any boarding facilities.  Students must reside with at least one parent or legal guardian in the Quito area in order to attend AC.

AC covers basic supplies. Additional supplies are sometimes required depending on grade level and course offering.

Yes, we offer Learning Support and accept children with a broad range of learning and developmental disabilities. We believe that high quality education is a basic human right for all children, and that including children who learn differently or at different rates enhances the education of all children. As part of the application process parents are requested to submit all relevant documentation to the admissions department so that we may determine whether or not we have the the right program to meet that child´s needs. Documents that are required are include Individualized Education Plans and educational and psychological assessments.

No. We offer Spanish for all levels in all grades.

For students applying from preschool to Grade 5, English is not a prerequisite. We offer an ELL program for our students.

For students applying to Grades 6 to Grade 10, it is necessary for the student to have a certain level of English; their understanding of the English language is determined during the Admissions and Evaluation process.

For students applying to Grades 11 and 12, English is necessary and we evaluate their level of English in order to be sure they will be successful at AC and in the IB program.


Report cards or transcripts that come from another country should be legalized in the country of origin and the originals provided to Admissions as part of the enrollment process. If you are coming from a local school (within Ecuador), we require the original "pases de año" from the Ministry of Education in order to facilitate the transfer from your child’s former school.

BYOD or Bring Your Own Device at Academia Cotopaxi is required from Grade 3 to Grade 12. Information regarding device and Grade Level Tech Requirements can be found here.
