From Pre-Kinder to Grade 2, Academia Cotopaxi provides a variety of resources to students, allowing them one on one and group access to devices as needed. In Grade 3, students enter the BYOD program and continue up through Grade 12. We teach them how to customize the device to suit their learning needs while making use of it to take learning beyond the classroom.
Consider how long the device will serve your child. An iPad purchase for a 3rd grade student will need to serve him/her for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. Purchasing a new iPad will ensure it will serve them for all the three years. However, purchasing an iPad for 5th grade will only serve one year, as in 6th grade the student will need a laptop. So, buying a used or slightly older iPad can help save a bit. This is why we have slightly more relaxed requirements in 4th and 5th grade. Laptops have a life of about 3-5 years.
This device will be used everyday by your child. It should not be a device that is shared with other family members. We’ve found that this type of shared use makes it difficult for the student to learn to maximize the tool and customize it to their learning. It also uses storage on the device that is necessary for apps and school related activities.
Students will need your help ensuring their device is charged everyday. There will be limited opportunities to charge the device while at school, and so they should come to school with the device fully charged. Work with your child to help them develop the habit of plugging in the device before bed.

For iPads - Academia Cotopaxi Device Enrollment Program
Your child’s iPad will be enrolled in the Academia Cotopaxi Device Enrollment Program (DEP). This will makes it easy for the AC Tech Services team to push apps to students, as well as, supervise and administer the iPad’s use while on campus. AC Tech Services will acquire necessary apps, both free and paid, for students. The DEP will also allow us to manage app licenses so that when your child exits AC or moves on to 6th grade, we’ll remove the paid app from the device. Free apps will be left in place.
Though the device requirements are designed so that the same computer can serve your child from grades 6-12, laptops have a useful lifespan of about 3-5 years. You might consider the following purchasing plan in your family budget.
We’ve developed a collection of resources that are web based and device agnostic. This means your child should rarely need to install any software. We’ll need them to install Google Chrome, and we’ll provider installers for tools they might have a specific need for at school.
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is typically used by businesses and individuals to add security and privacy by creating a secured path across the internet. A VPN also allows a user to appear as if they are in a different location. For example, a VPN can make it look as if you are using your computer in the United States, even though you are here in Ecuador. This can be useful for taking advantages of web services like Netflix while outside of the US.
A number of VPN services are available free, such as Hola, Tunnelbear, Hotspot Shield, etc. As these services are free, it’s difficult to trust their use. In fact, some have been proven to actually be major security and privacy risks. They consume valuable shared network resources (bandwidth) and put your child and our entire network at risk. For this reason, all VPN, both free and paid, are prohibited at AC. If we identify the use of a VPN in school, we will uninstall the VPN from the device.
